ESSENCE OF HOME
Textiles - Fall 2025 | Research the works of different textile artists and create your own textiles project influenced by their techniques.
This project was inspired by the textile works of Ruby Chishti, a Pakistani-American artist who works with recycled fabric and found materials, and Amanda McCavour, a Canadian artist who works exclusively with thread.
Made entirely out of tulle fabric and thread, this delicate sculpture depicts a deconstructed house, representing the fragility of a physical structure in comparison to the “true essence of home,” which is established by the people and experiences that give a space meaning.
The interior portion of this piece features hanging picture frames, the silhouettes of children playing, and miniature light orbs. While the actual model itself is not the most exceptional-looking, its main function is to cast large shadows for a more dynamic and interactive viewing experience. As the tiny house spins around, participants become encapsulated within the sculpture’s four walls. The hazy shadows flicker in and out, evoking a similar feeling to recalling a distant memory of the places we’ve made a home out of.
