MONSTER BEINGS

Design Studio II - Fall 2021 | Create a “monster being” then design a shelter for them that meets their unique needs near campus.

For this project, I created a non-gendered character I called the Rabbit Hunter whose body was half-rabbit, half-fox. This creature’s “unique condition” was its head’s unpredictable impulse to suddenly start chasing its rabbit tail. Essentially, this character possessed an uncontrollable urge to hunt itself.

My creation of the Rabbit Hunter was intended to serve as a metaphor for the internal conflict humans often face between the contradicting parts of themself.

The collages shown below were created on Photoshop to tell the story of my creature.

After an extensive process of developing my creature’s backstory and researching our building site, I came to a couple conclusions on how to most effectively address the Rabbit Hunter’s individual needs through architectural design.

Settling on a location underneath the bridge, I came up with a proposal for the hanging huts shown below. These small shelters are only accessible to the Rabbit Hunter, as you have to jump from platform to platform over the creek. A shaded area helps the shelter blend into its surroundings, and the round forms accommodate the creature’s spatial needs. All apertures were minimized to maintain as much privacy as possible and each hut is intended to fit one inhabitant comfortably.
